Genzlinger added: "Artists' windy chatter about their creative angst rarely makes interesting listening for anyone but hard-core fans, and there's a fair amount of it in From the Sky Down," he wrote. "But the film ... has a few segments that get beyond platitudes." Meanwhile, Hank Steuver of the Washington Post called the doc "intriguing." "From the Sky Down is packed with enough songs and performance footage to stoke a viewer's romance with U2, but it never loses sight that it is about a technical process," he wrote. From Seoul to Varanasi (Varanasi)

Like the aforementioned films scripted by Guillermo Arriaga and helmed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, "From Seoul to Varanasi" offers a kaleidoscopic introduction to its protagonists. In seemingly random but actually calculated and judicious fashion, Jeon quickly presents book publisher Yeong-woo (Yoon Dong-hwan) having sex in various hotels with his mistress, Su-yeon (Shin Ye-an), a writer for his publishing house. Audacious glimpses of full-frontal nudity are juxtaposed with scenes of another woman, later revealed to be Yeong-woo's wife, Ji-yeong (Choi Won-jung), seen variously walking the streets of Indian holy city Varanasi (in flash-forward) and attending what looks like a yoga class in Seoul (in the present). Other faces include Kerim (Nollaig Walsh), a Lebanese waiter in an Indian restaurant; his sibling, yoga teacher Samira (Cassandra Holmes); and a glaring, bespectacled man of unknown origin (Nigel D'Sa). Before it becomes clear who's who, the helmer gently familiarizes auds with each character's presence, like a chef stirring together subtle ingredients to create a potent brew. While exiting a car park, Ji-yeong damages a curbside sign for the Indian eatery where Kerim works, and supplies her phone number so she can be billed for repairs. Later, Kerim is rushed to the hospital after collapsing in the street; since Ji-yeong's phone number is in his pocket, the hospital staff call her. Ji-yeong is intrigued and attracted not only to Kerim, but also to the wider world he represents, and the film deftly demonstrates how, as Yeong-woo's wife withdraws, his affair with Su-yeon becomes increasingly troubled. The script falters when a subplot about Islamic terrorism comes to the fore; while Jeon deals astutely with relationship terrain, his grip on geopolitics seems less certain. As the film reaches its India-set conclusion, it undermines itself by remaining unclear about what it intends to achieve once most of the characters have made it to Varanasi. On the whole, perfs are superb. Physically towering over everyone else with his polished scalp, Yoon is an unusual male lead for a Korean film, backing up his striking appearance with a fiery screen presence as natural as it is intense. Shin nails the challenging role of a woman realizing her b.f. and boss is drifting away from her, while Choi, somewhat overshadowed, is appropriately low-key as the housewife looking for love and for herself. While the non-Korean thesps mostly communicate in English, Walsh is equally convincing in his Korean-language scenes with Choi. Burdened with the script's most cliched character, D'Sa is distinguished only by his glazed stare. Digital lensing is on the grainy side, but Jeon makes this low-budget look work for him, creating the cool impression of a scientist examining his specimens. According to the Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye, French actress Bérénice Marlohe is the new Bond girl, and Helen McCrory and Ben Whishaw will also be joining her in 007's latest adventure.While the reports are unconfirmed, Bamigboye does have form in this area, announcing the likes of Naomie Harris and Ralph Fiennes previously.Marlohe is hasn't really done anything yet that would have reached a wide international audience, which could benefit her when it comes to playing what's bound to be a mysterious, glamourous and unreadable figure.According to the report, she impressed Sam Mendes at a screen test at Pinewood Studios.McCrory and Whishaw's roles aren't clear yet. American Horror Story Off To Solid Start

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falcuk’s new FX drama series American Horror Story launched with 3.2 million viewers and 2 million adults 18-49 at 10 PM last night. It matched the premiere demo rating of Murphy’s previous FX series, the hit Nip/Tuck, and was up 33% from the series debut of FX’s current flagship drama Sons of Anarchy (1.5 million). It is running behind the all-time FX champ — the series premiere of FX’s signature cop drama The Shield, which collared 3.2 million viewers in 18-49 — but that might change, according to FX president and general manager John Landgraf. Were really thrilled by the premiere ratings performance of American Horror Story, he said. We know that when the Live+7 ratings come in, that of the 13 drama series FX has premiered, AHS will rank at least No. 2 all-time in adults 18-49 behind The Shield, and there is a possibility that it could be our highest ever. Landgraf also noted the spike in social media traffic triggered by the AHS premiere. For its premiere night, including two encores, AHS averaged 5 million viewers, 3.2 million of them in the adults 18-49 demo.

How Russian Broadcasters Are Trying to Lure Young Audiences Back to TV

"Links to music tracks, videos, shows, anything. And I can get access to all that whenever I want to, so I don't really watch television much these days." Nikolayev's attitude is similar to that of millions of young Russians. It's a change that's sounding alarms within the country's TV sector, which is easily the largest and most profitable in Eastern Europe ($4.2 billion spent on TV ads in 2010). The decline in viewers is now leading Russia's biggest broadcasters to shake up programming in an effort to lure coveted younger viewers away from their laptops. It's a subject that will surely be front and center during a Focus on Russia sidebar at MIPCOM. During the past year, fewer Russians have been watching TV. According to media research group TNS Russia, from January to August 2011, 67.8 percent of the population age 4 and up watched television, down from 69 percent during the same period in 2010. (An estimated 95 percent of Americans watch TV.) Among the coveted 18-to-25 Russian demographic, the drop was an even more alarming 2.6 percent. It doesn't help matters that the Russian population is shrinking, making for fewer people to target in the most important demographic. "Younger people don't read papers and watch very little TV," says Konstantin Maksimyuk, creative director at market research company Novy Internet. "Television is for lazy and tired people, while the active and young choose the Internet as it gives them more interactive opportunities." According to TNS, an estimated 25 million Russians -- 17.5 percent of the population of 143 million -- use social network websites. Russia's handful of main national TV channels are protected from a full online onslaught as Internet penetration in far-flung regions lags behind that of main free-to-air channels. But when the Internet catches up, the decline of traditional TV might become more significant. Channels including Rossiya 1 and Rossiya 2, run by state-owned broadcaster VGTRK, say they have nothing to worry about, but the country's biggest TV network, Channel One, admits that its programming models are out of touch with contemporary Russian viewers. "You can't remain enthralled to outdated stereotypes," says Konstantin Ernst, general director of Channel One. "The television model, which effectively worked for 15 years, has deteriorated, broken down and exhausted itself. There is a need for new formats." Blue-chip dramas like CSI and Dexter are popular in Russia, but international reality formats such as Survivor, Big Brother and American Idol thrive. This helps explain why Russian programmers are targeting audiences with a mix of comedy and variety shows. Channel One is fighting to keep the viewers it has while reaching out to those it has never targeted. Beginning in 2012, the channel will switch its preferred demographic from 18-plus to 14-to-59 and offer targeted fare for age slivers within that bracket. Among the programs aiming for younger audiences are Channel One's edgy sketch-comedy shows Big Difference, Personality Cartoon and Yesterday Live, all of which feature irreverent content designed to compete with popular online fare like the website Funny or Die. Responding to the social networking buzz, by which foreign series generate more chatter than domestic fare, the station also has launched the late-night block Urban Hipsters, which will feature foreign series popular among Russian Internet audiences. Slated to run in that slot are Showtime's The Borgias and Californication, AMC's Mad Men and Fox's Terra Nova. In addition, Channel One hopes to entice younger viewers with the provocative Crash Course on Happy Life. Revolving around young, urban women, it is directed by Valeriya Gay Germanika, known for her teen-targeted show School, which shocked Russia's conservative viewers with its unflattering depiction of contemporary Moscow teenagers. Even channels with older audiences are acknowledging competition from the Internet. Ren TV, which targets viewers ages 35-to-45, has launched a website that allows viewers to watch the channel in real time and create their own programming. They only pay for shows they watch. "It's not really about opposition between television and the Internet," says Alexander Nechayev, deputy director general and programming director at NTV. "It's just another way of accessing the same content." Indeed, some Russian programmers see the growing popularity of online entertainment as more of an opportunity than a threat. "Television and the Internet will turn from competitors to partners, and work toward that end is actively in progress," says Vyacheslav Murugov, chief content officer at CTC Media and head of CTC Channel. Ultimately, it will be for Russian viewers to decide whether that model works for them. "That would be probably fun," says Nikolayev. "I mean, watching stuff and discussing it with friends in real time? But will it be considered television? I would still say it would be online stuff, and I would prefer to be doing it on my computer." CANNES -- Expanding its reach in Asia, Sundance Channel Global has closed a carriage deal for Sundance Channel HD with Astro, Malaysia's key pay TV operator, in the run up to the Mipcom TV mart in Cannes. In addition to Malaysia, Sundance Channel Global is present in Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and in various countries throughout Europe and Canada. "Astro has made remarkable strides in leading Malaysia's adoption of high-definition TV and other technologies with Astro B.yond and we are excited to work with such a high-caliber operator in bringing our channel to this new territory," said Ed Palluth, senior VP of global distribution for AMC/Sundance Channel Global.
