John Carter Producer: Pixar Backlash the reason behind Cars 2 Oscar Snub?
Last summer time season Cars 2 marked a notable footnote inside the good status for Pixar Animation, only a bad one despite opening for the art galleries sixth-finest worldwide require now, the follow-up to 2006s Cars acquired middling reviews, motivated experts to deem it a commercial cash-grab, and lastly maybe most shockingly, due to the studio's history increased being the initial Pixar film not to nab an Oscar jerk for top Animated Feature since the category was inaugurated. Will it be, as Pixar producer Lindsey Collins signifies, that Cars 2 was Oscar-snubbed because of anti-Pixar backlash? Speaking to press today in Phoenix, Arizona for John Carter, which she produced for longtime Pixar collaborator Andrew Stanton, Collins examined why Cars 2 was overlooked meant for five other animated films (The Kitty in Paris, Chico and Rita, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, and Rango). The fact [Cars 2] will be a follow-up -- with techniques its funny, because clearly in the franchise perspective everybody loves sequels, Collins referred to. And certainly in the franchise perspective Cars 2 did insanely well, to ensure that we cant even count it an excellent metric to see us should you do sequels. Follow-up status aside, Collins surmised a larger reason was working in the John Lasseter-directed pic, which was the initial Pixar film to earn an over-all rotten score on Rotten Tomato vegetables. It had the fact Pixar has centered going against it, she added. Inside a certain point there's apt to be somebody that would proceed and take fall a little. It might finish up like, Right, we dont like this certain. However, Cars 2s nomination miss might be lined around the relatively deep section of animated films inside the running for Oscar this year a couple of which surprised Collins and defied her anticipation in the competition. I see all of individuals things because the kids drag me on their behalf all, also to me it felt like God, you'll find good quality animated films this year. I truly had among people, Theres two several hours of my existence that I am not likely to return [ideas], and you venture out like, Really, that was quite good! Among the great pictures not produced from Pixar that Collins had praise for? I loved Rango," she recognized. There has been really good quality pictures this year. For that cold critical reception and accusations of crass commercialism Cars 2 received, Collins keeps that Lasseter truly, truly loves the follow-up -- and Pixar, she states, sports ths films its stable of company company directors desire to make. John loves that world, he loves people figures. We have got billed with being very commercial from it which is kind of funny, its so ironic if youve met John Lasseter theres not just a disingenuous bone because men body. First Lady rallies Hollywood crowd
Appearing at the first of two fundraisers during a swing through Los Angeles on Tuesday, Michelle Obama asked a crowd heavy in show biz donors, "Are you with us?" The First Lady was at a fundraiser at the Beverly Hills home of former Ambassador to the Bahamas Nicole Avant and her husband, Netflix's Ted Sarandos. "In the last three years, we've worked hard to get out of this mess and we've made some remarkable progress, but we know there are people still suffering and there is a long road left to travel," Obama said, per a pool report. Her husband's reelection campaign is courting Hollywood donors, trying to shore up support in what is expected to be a costly and bruising battle in the fall. President Obama is scheduled to visit Los Angeles on Feb. 15 for a series of events at the home of Colleen and Bradley Bell. Although there has been some grousing among studio chiefs after the White House released a statement critical of anti-piracy legislation, diminishing its prospects in Congress, Michelle Obama did not address the topic in her remarks before the crowd of about 135. Those who were there included Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steve Bing, Berry Gordy, Vivica Ferrell, Quincy Jones, Jerry and Ann Moss, Jimmy Jam, Irena and Mike Medavoy, Rob and Michele Reiner, Terry Lewis, Reed Hastings, Arnon Milchan and Harvey Weinstein. One attendee said that also present were Haim and Cheryl Saban, significant because Haim Saban had been regarded as one of the holdouts to Obama's 2008 campaign. He was a major backer of Hillary Clinton in 2008, but was not involved in the general election after Obama secured the nomination. Michelle Obama also talked about conversations she has with her husband, who sometimes tells her stories of the people he meets. "He might not remember your name, but he'll never forget your story." Irena Medavoy, who raised money for Obama in 2008 and is returning this cycle, said of Michelle Obama's remarks, "She has grown into such a formidable warm and wonderful First Lady. She was always a great partner but now she is a First Lady who is campaigning. You can see the difference." Obama's visit also included a stop at "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and an appearance on "The Ellen Show." She is scheduled to attend a fundraiser tomorrow at the home of James and Mattie Lawson. Tickets to the event on Tuesday started at $5,000 per person, and $35,800 per couple to also attend a special greeting and photo with the First Lady. Contact Ted Johnson at ted.johnson@variety.com

Sergey NagornyGot the Part Role: Ensemble in 'The Lost and Found Project,' a nonunion, Off-Off-Broadway experimental play By Sri Gordon January 30, 2012 When Sergey Nagorny saw the casting notice for "The Lost and Found Project," an experimental play compiling family stories relating to Russian-Jewish immigration to the U.S., he had no doubt he had to audition. As an actor from the Ukraine with a Jewish background, Nagorny knew that his personal experience would be particularly relevant to the projectand a little thing like being unavailable during the auditions was not going to stop him from getting cast. After he explained the situation to the production team, it agreed to let him audition on the first day of rehearsals. If cast, he would join as an ensemble member then and there. "I went in with the thought that I had to win them over, since it would be great to jump right into rehearsals that same day and would not be great at all to be told 'No, thank you' and walk out as everyone else in the cast was coming in to rehearse," Nagorny says. "I was a bit nervous, as the writer herself was in the room to hear her words performed.... It wasn't the matter of making it real, as it was as real as it gets to me already," he explains. "It was the matter of making sure to stay true to the text and making the audience see how truly close to home, and my heart, the piece was." After waiting while the production team deliberated, Nagorny was welcomed into the cast as the final member of the ensemble. Co-producer Marina Reydler says Nagorny's charisma and preparation made his audition successful. "Sergey has a very big personality that comes through when he walks in," she says. "He was also prepared to do his callback monologue,so he already came in with the bar set high, and he reached it." Nagorny says the developmental nature of the project is an unusual aspect of the experience. "I am able to see all of the steps it takes to produce a play from its very beginning," he says. "You come together as 10 individuals, and by the time the project is ready to be put up, the 10 become one." Nagorny's experience includes "J-1," an independent short, and a Phiten bracelet commercial with N.Y. Knicks player Carmelo Anthony. He is represented by the agencies Abrams Artists and Paradigm. SAG Honours: Have an Exclusive First Consider the Seating Chart!
Screen Stars Guild Honours What is the toughest job in showbiz? It might be seating the Screen Stars Guild Honours."I describe it as being seating on speed! It's seating for any wedding, however the wedding is on camera," SAG Honours producer Kathy Connell informs TVGuide.com. "Nobody knows that the SAG Honours has more stars than every other award show because we are the only person that honors casts and ensembles. Our room is small, but we've the biggest quantity of stars associated with a honours event, therefore it is an enormous challenge each year to determine where you can put everybody."Modern Family rules SAG nominationsThis year's show demonstrated to become the greatest challenge yet because of the big nominated casts within the running - Glee, Bet on Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Work and also the Help, to title a couple of. Connell confesses that they and her team were concern about doing the seating, which required them six . 5 hrs but still is not complete, pending last-minute confirmations and pull-outs."It had been frightening this season, however i possess the best team. You will find four people who've tried it for a long time,Inch she states. "We attempt and determine the number of people you will find inside a cast, what specific issues we've - if they are getting another actor who wasn't the official cast member but was important, if they would like to sit using the director, the number of are coming, if you will find two nominees from the film, such as the Help [Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer] because they'll have to be at separate tables therefore the cameras can shoot them, and who we are able to sit elsewhere. A few of the large casts are in large tables after which split over multiple tables ... therefore we add the individually nominated stars and presenters."Another factor Team SAG Seating views is how coming back nominees were sitting the prior year. When they were within the back, then they'll be right in front the year after and the other way around. Unlike the Golden Globe Honours, where film stars are in the forefront and television folk have been in the rear and outer edge, the SAGs are equal chance seaters. The Great Wife cast, for instance, may have prime seats right while watching stage this season, as seen below within our first consider the arrangement."We're very democratic," Connell states. "Stars don't care. Stars love stars. Whenever we began a long time ago, there is a bit more separation between TV and film, but take a look at the number of film stars are TV stars too. The might have been just a little segregated, but stars haven't been. They mix the medians plus they understand how hard it's to complete film work and television work. They're so sincere of one another."Browse the fashion hits and misses from last year's SAG AwardsIn that sense, stars rarely request where or with whom to become sitting, Connell states, except in special conditions. Betty Kemper is really a double nominee included in the Office and Bridesmaids ensembles, and requested to become sitting using the latter since this is the only real time Bridesmaids is ever going to be nominated. But her Office mates will not be too far - they are in the next table. "As we can perform such things as that, only then do we get it done,Inch Connell states. "We do not really consider who're buddies because guess what happens? It is a room of buddies. They are all buddies and when they are not every buddies, they are lovers of one another. I saw an excellent moment twelve months in which a film actor went up to and including television actor going, 'I just viewed a whole marathon day's you!' They love one another. All of them got a ballot to election for one another."Not every tables require Connell to use her thinking cap however. Table 26 is definitely restricted to the Existence Achievement Award recipient, who's Mary Tyler Moore this season. The table is close to the front, although not too near to the stage. "It provides them a good enough walk that you will get to determine the crowd fully stand up,Inch Connell states. "We do not chair the Existence Achievement person at the back of the area, however, you don't place them at [Table] 8 because you heard right while watching stage and also you will not ask them to taking pleasure in the ovation, that is always an excellent moment." Talking about great moments, Uggie your dog in the Artist stole the show in the Golden Globes a week ago, try not to rely on a redux in the SAGs. "We are low on seating out of the box, and so i don't anticipate him coming," Connell states. "Things show up last second, however i think we'd determine if they are getting your dog!InchThe 18th Annual Screen Stars Guild Honours airs Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on TNT and The best spinner's.Take a look at where a few of the stars are sitting below.Key:Cast of Glee: Tables 40 and 41Cast of Bridesmaids: Table 18Cast from the Good Wife: Table 13Cast of contemporary Family: Tables 15 and 16Cast of 30 Rock: Tables 10 and 11Cast from the Large Bang Theory: Tables 12 and 17Cast from the Office: Table 25George Clooney: Table 21Brad Pitt: Table 8Life Achievement Award recipient (Mary Tyler Moore): Table 26

CBS on twin track to Lawrence laffer
LawrenceCBS is doubling down in its effort to develop a sitcom vehicle for Martin Lawrence, setting scribes Tom Hertz and Larry Wilmore on separate paths to create a property for the comedian. The decision to engage two high-level comedy scribes is a sign of CBS' interest in having a Lawrence-fronted laffer on its air next season. The comic signed a development pact with the Eye last fall (Daily Variety, Sept. 15)."Rules of Engagement" creator-exec producer Hertz is penning a Sony Pictures TV/CBS TV Studios project revolving around a family man who tries to raise down-to-earth kids despite the influence of his wealthy in-laws. Project is set up through Adam Sandler's Sony-based Happy Madison banner, which is also home to "Rules." Happy Madison's Doug Robinson will exec produce with Hertz.Wilmore is working on a script for CBS TV Studios that centers on a single man who becomes a foster parent to several children along with his sister. "This is a benefit for people. Too for us not to no less than attempt to search for uses of this brand to license our product, to create platforms around our product, happens to be an chance wasted. Now whether we could carry it out in the significant approach we decide to try have no clue yet. We're trying."Clients are very busy they use brands to help guide those to what's available, Lang thinks. "Even our certification handles people like Netflix and Hulu, they've taken our content and they've high quality it the Miramax films."At this time around pictures bought using the Miramax application are streamed. There's no local download without any cloud storage. Lang states Miramax can be a large believer inside the cloud-based digital locker concept, plus they might like photos offered through their application to eventually be inside the cloud, but they're not implementing part inside the existing UltraViolet platform."I'm not a real large fan of industry consortiums or various organizations getting together and looking to dictate to 3rd-party retailers just what the rules in the road are," he mentioned. "In my opinion we could have various conversations with individual people, so when UltraViolet ultimately becomes the format the retreats into I'm all for it and we'll support it. But I'm not really beholden regarding the the media industry states it'll be.InchBasically stood a choice today, I'm putting my eggs inside the Apple iCloud basket. In my opinion they'll decipher it, they'll create a great cloud experience, which we're very searching toward being a member of that."Land is confident UltraViolet together with other platforms will emerge besides Apple's iCloud. "You need to be on all people platforms but shouldn't maintain one format until everyone knows how a standard evolves."He disagrees with News Corp-chief digital officer Jonathan Miller's warning that content companies must offer more video plus much more options to clients, and not focus on using existing content. "I still believe there is a substantial opportunity to consider your general library and uncover techniques to take advantage of it around the globe, since you will find lots of platforms. We're fortunate because regard because we don't have existing companies which get if this involves that. We're maniacally dedicated to creating value off our existing library wherever we could.InchLang is yet another large believer in Apple leading the charge in how more content can get shipped afterwards, especially Tv shows.InchThey'll move ahead and the majority of the other great producers will adapt to that but also for a bigger marketplace," he mentioned. "Along with the actual product definition or experience, at our little company, we're feeling Apple will move ahead in this.In . Contact David S. Cohen at david.cohen@variety.com

Both were drawn on for script prize through the National Board of Review and D.C. film crix. Also hearkening the nightmare motif was Lynne Ramsay & Rory Kinnear's Columbine-esque drama "We have to Discuss Kevin," Eric Roth's publish-9/11 tale "Very Noisy & Incredibly Close" and Asghar Farhadi's family tragedy "A Separation," named top script through the L.A. film crix. The groggy daze of the hangover set a dark tone for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo's "Bridesmaids" and Diablo Cody's "Youthful Adult," in which a stiff drink motivated several character to question, "What have I done?"For any more obvious-eyed alert approach, there is the truth check of Tate Taylor's "The AssistanceInch and Aaron Sorkin and Zaillian's "Moneyball," honored through the NY and Boston film crix.
